BIO: JoAnne Wilton & Laura Lee Millard-Smith
JoAnne Wilton: JoAnne Wilton grew up in the Georgian Triangle on an apple farm. She started teaching with the Simcoe County District School Board in 1993. During that time, she has worked in several high schools, including Collingwood Collegiate. In 2005, JoAnne started teaching at the Collingwood Alternative School. After several years, she and Laura Lee Millard Smith collaborated to create an Educational Outreach program. JoAnne met with students in the community to help them earn their diplomas. Her passion for helping students succeed, led her to an Itinerant Resource Teacher role at the School Board. JoAnne has been working for Simcoe Shores Secondary School as a guidance and special education teacher and classroom teacher since 2013.
Laura Lee Millard-Smith: Laura Lee worked as an educator and educational administrator, leaving an indelible mark in alternative education in her career. Her journey as an educational leader culminated as she accepted the position of principal of a newly formed alternative school in Simcoe County. Beginning in 2015 she opened and led Simcoe Shores Secondary School, where she leveraged teacher using progressive educational strategies, fostered a culture of student engagement and success, as well as ensuring a feeling of belonging and well-being for students. Under Laura Lee's leadership, Simcoe Shores SS witnessed transformative changes, marked by initiatives that added multiple modes for learning, enhanced student engagement, academic achievement, and community involvement. Her visionary approach emphasized inclusivity, diversity, and innovation, creating a dynamic and conducive learning environment for all. Retirement hasn't dimmed Laura Lee's passion for education. She continues to mentor aspiring educators by teaching at Lakehead University in the Bachelor of Education program, volunteer for educational causes - such as Sweet Charity (a non-profit organization committed to training canines to be in schools), and advocate for policies that prioritize the needs of students and teachers alike.
